ECO-Designed and repairable sneaker
For CARUUS in 2018
THE CONTEXT
- CARUUS is born from the realisation that the lifespan of clothing has been halved over these past 20 years. Most noticeably, the average French consumer buys 4 pairs of shoes every year, which approximates to a use lifespan of only 3 months.
- The brand was therefore created with the aim of offering a range of shoes which are made in France and are designed along circular economy guidelines.
OUR INVOLVEMENT
- Define the business model which represents the best potential in terms of environmental considerations.
- Identify the environmental issues connected to a pair of sneakers throughout its lifecycle
- Design a pair of sneakers which comply with environmental requirements, but also with the aesthetic expectations defined with the project team.
- Offer innovative eco-design solutions which apply to the whole life cycle of the product (materials, distribution, use, end-of-life) on the mid- and long-term.
- Pilot the prototyping phase for the sneakers.
- Assess the improvements achieved compared to the initial project.
THE AIMS
- CARUUS, Cooperative Mu, and the trend forecasting expert Marie de Sagalony, have worked together to create a pair of eco-designed sneakers which are also stylish and desirable.
- Particular attention was placed on the potential for the sneakers to allow for repair so as to extend their lifespan as much as possible. The different materials involved can also be separated to enable recycling.
THE RESULTS
- Significant environmental benefits compared to the initial reference project, particularly through the design of a reparable model, the selection of exemplary materials and through the optimisation of distribution.
- Two items presented at the Made in France 2018 trade show: the first one intended for a short-term launch and a second, more innovative one, which will be further developed.
“Today it seems unimaginable to embark on an entrepreneur and innovative project without considering their environmental impact. With CARUUS, this was made possible through the collaboration with Cooperative Mu.”
